Europe's Gas Prices Soar to Multi-Year Highs Amid Geopolitical Tensions
European natural gas prices surged by nearly 5% on Monday, hitting fresh multi-year highs. The UK NBP wholesale gas contract rose to 201.50p per therm, its strongest point since late 2022. The Dutch front-month TTF benchmark added around 5%, reaching 83.40 euros per megawatt-hour.
The increases were fueled by concerns over geopolitical risks, particularly transit problems in the Middle East and depleted storage inventories in Europe. Yukio Kani, Global CEO and Chair of JERA, warned that European gas inventories are still low and that shipping interruptions near the Strait of Hormuz might last longer than expected.
The steep climb in natural gas prices, combined with rising Brent crude oil prices, is exacerbating stagflationary strains throughout European economies. Central bankers from Frankfurt to Washington may need to maintain restrictive policy settings deep into next year to prevent energy shocks from triggering wider price spirals.
