Europe's Gas Prices Soar to Three-Year High Ahead of Winter
European natural gas prices have surged to their highest levels in over three years as the continent prepares for the winter heating season. Bulgaria's gas storage facilities are 65.34% full, slightly below the European Union average of 67.12%, but ahead of Germany's 54.75%. The country's reserves are significantly higher than those of neighboring Romania and Croatia.
The rise in prices comes amid concerns over supplies and geopolitical tensions, with constraints on liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries adding to the pressure. EU households and industry face renewed price pressure even before peak winter demand begins, according to analysts. The International Energy Agency is calling for greater attention to emergency gas reserves, citing the need for sufficient buffers to respond to sudden supply disruptions.
The challenge lies in replenishing storage levels before winter, as higher gas prices make the process more expensive. This leaves Europe exposed to developments during the winter season, with a colder-than-expected season or stronger international demand for LNG potentially forcing countries to compete for limited supplies at even higher prices.
