Europe's Gas Prices Soar to Three-Year High Amid Middle East Conflict
Natural gas prices in Europe have skyrocketed to their highest level in over three years, sparking supply concerns ahead of winter. On Tuesday, benchmark European gas traded above 75 euros per megawatt-hour, more than double the price seen a year ago.
The surge is largely driven by disruptions in maritime trade due to conflict in the Middle East and increased global competition for liquefied natural gas (LNG). European buyers are scrambling to secure uncontracted LNG cargoes amidst competing demand from Asian markets.
European gas storage facilities are entering autumn at historically low levels, with reserves filled to around 67 percent of capacity. This is below the EU's mandate requiring member states to reach at least 80 percent storage by November 1.
The increase in gas prices is already impacting electricity markets across Europe, with wholesale power prices reaching multi-month highs in several countries. In August, Spain's wholesale pool price rose to an average of 118.25 euros per megawatt-hour, while France saw monthly prices reach 122.80 euros, Germany 126.94 euros, and Italy 182.40 euros.
