Europe's Gas Storage Crisis Threatens Winter Supply as Prices Soar
European natural gas prices have skyrocketed to their highest levels in over three years, with benchmark Dutch TTF prices consistently trading above 65 euros per megawatt-hour this week.
The price surge comes as storage facilities across Europe sit at a critically low level of just 50 percent full ahead of winter, raising concerns about supply security and escalating costs for households and industry.
Germany, which holds the largest storage volumes among EU states with 40 facilities representing about a quarter of total EU capacity, faces particular pressure to meet its regulatory target of 80 percent storage by the end of October.
The Association of Transmission System Operators Gas warned that meeting this deadline appears unlikely, noting that even with a storage injection of up to 1.2 terawatt-hours per day - the highest value ever observed in the market - the target would be difficult to achieve.
