Europe's Gas Storage Hits Lowest Level Since 2011, Raising Winter Price Fears
Europe's natural gas storage levels have hit their lowest point in early August since 2011, sparking concerns over supply security and potential price hikes ahead of the winter heating season. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe data, as of August 5th, European Union gas storage facilities were only 57% full, significantly lower than the nearly 70% recorded at the same time last year.
The slower refill pace has raised doubts over whether the EU will reach its indicative target of filling storage sites to 80% by December. Analysts warn that lower inventories could leave the market more vulnerable to price volatility during the winter months, particularly if colder-than-normal weather increases heating demand.
Wood Mackenzie noted that Europe's low storage levels have heightened supply security risks for the upcoming winter months. The firm expects limited growth in global LNG supply and firm demand in Asia to keep gas prices elevated through the season.
