Europe's Gas Supply Crunch Deepens as Netherlands Misses Winter Target
The Netherlands is facing a natural gas supply crunch ahead of winter, with its gas network operators warning that the country will miss its target to fill storage sites. Gasunie, the Dutch gas network operator, said on Wednesday that the country will not meet its target of 115 terawatt-hours (TWh) worth of gas supply, which is approximately half of Dutch gas consumption. This shortfall is a sign that Europe may struggle to have sufficient natural gas for the winter.
Gasunie Transport Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gasunie, established the filling target based on the amount of gas required during the harshest winter of the past 30 years. However, despite this, the operator said that not meeting the target does not necessarily mean that the Netherlands will not have enough gas supply for the winter or that security of supply is at risk.
The situation is being closely watched across Europe, where current inventory levels are at their lowest in 17 years and supply available for purchase is tighter than it was ahead of the 2022/2023 winter. The EU's gas storage levels are currently at 63% full, below the 5-year average of 80%, and lower than the nearly 76% level seen at this time last year.
