Europe's LNG Prices Soar Amid Winter Supply Concerns
European liquefied natural gas prices have surged to their highest level since early 2023, according to Argus Media. The current price of $22.83 per million British thermal units (Btu) is more than double the level seen a year ago and marks the highest price since January 2023.
The Financial Times notes that the rise in gas prices has been more pronounced than in oil, where prices have also increased substantially this year. European buyers are paying higher prices for LNG amid concerns over a possible supply shortage this winter.
Reduced LNG supplies from the Middle East have affected all major importers, but Europe has proven particularly vulnerable. Even before the war in Iran began, gas inventories on the continent were below typical levels for this time of year.
European storage facilities are being replenished more slowly than usual, with analysts warning that inventories may be insufficient ahead of the winter season. In Germany, storage facilities are currently only about 50% full, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe.
