Europe's Natural Gas Prices Hit Five-Month High Amid LNG Competition
Europe's natural gas prices have reached a five-month high in recent days due to the region's competition for liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply. The surge in gas prices is particularly challenging because Europe typically builds up its natural gas inventories during spring and summer for the next winter.
According to Gas Infrastructure Europe, current storage levels stand at about 63% full, which is the lowest for this time of year in nearly two decades and well below the five-year average. The spike in gas prices threatens to push inflation higher and could lead to interest rate hikes beyond current expectations.
Citigroup's European rates strategist Jamie Searle noted that natural gas prices have become the primary driver of yields, while Emma Moriarty, a portfolio manager at CG Asset Management, commented that gas prices are more relevant to the UK and Europe, and have not recovered during ceasefires, continuing to climb.
Higher energy prices have already boosted inflation in both the UK and the Eurozone, with July price increases accelerating from the previous month and jumping from a year earlier. The European Central Bank is widely expected to announce another interest rate hike in September but may pause thereafter.
