Europe's Power Prices Set to Soar as Gas Prices Hit €60/MWh
Natural gas prices have surged above €60/MWh in Europe due to Middle Eastern supply disruptions, according to Rabobank. The bank's Florence Schmit notes that this has pushed TTF benchmark gas futures up more than 15% over eight consecutive sessions as of July 23. The escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict and its impact on energy supply routes have contributed to these price increases.
The Qatar government paused efforts to rapidly revive LNG production in early July, which had previously pushed TTF gas back above €50/MWh. However, the latest uncertainties surrounding the conflict have driven prices beyond €60/MWh.
Rabobank expects gas prices to remain high going into the second half of this year, limiting the downside for power prices in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. As winter demand replaces summer demand, gas-fired generation will again be needed to meet load, particularly in these countries, keeping power prices elevated.
This exposure to renewed TTF upside has significant implications for European energy markets. Geopolitical supply risks continue to dominate TTF futures, keeping prices elevated and leaving markets vulnerable to further increases.
