Europe's Wildfires Spark Market Volatility and Milk Shortages
Devastating wildfires have ravaged parts of Europe and the UK, affecting grain production and causing price hikes in global markets. The dry spell has been particularly severe in Spain, France, and the southeast region of England.
The European heatwaves have also taken a toll on milk production, with overproduction earlier this year giving way to underproduction due to the harsh weather conditions. In the UK, milk production is down by 18.5 million litres so far, while in Europe, France and Germany have seen declines of 7% and 3.6%, respectively.
The USDA forecasts a record-low wheat crop for over 50 years, driven by reduced acreage and drought in the Southern plains. The global market is experiencing increased volatility due to geopolitical risks, including the ongoing war in the Middle East and Ukraine's attacks on Russian ships in the Black Sea.
