Exxon Stock Fades as Oil Spike Raises Warning Signs
Exxon Mobil's stock initially rallied on Thursday after Brent crude surged to $105.26 per barrel, but the gains were short-lived as investors treated the oil spike as both a boost and a warning.
The integrated oil-and-gas producer produced $14.5 billion in second-quarter earnings and $17.2 billion in free cash flow, with upstream operations contributing $7.93 billion or 54.6% of total earnings.
One quarter's free cash flow alone equals about 2.3% of Exxon's $738 billion market capitalization, giving the company significant financial firepower if crude remains elevated.
However, the valuation picture demands caution, with Exxon's share price at $164.01 being 28.79% above its GF Value of $127.35, suggesting that optimism may already be priced in.
