ExxonMobil's 20th Angola Oil Discovery: A High-Return Opportunity?
ExxonMobil's latest oil discovery in Block 15 off Angola's coast is its 20th find in the area, which has already produced a massive 2.7 billion barrels of oil since 1998. The company holds a 36% interest and operates the block, covering around 1,044 square kilometers (258,000 acres).
The previous 19 discoveries in this acreage have already produced approximately 3 billion barrels of recoverable resources, with the latest discovery at the Vicango Este-01 exploration well expected to increase this total. ExxonMobil's control over capital allocation, project timing, and operating decisions gives it an advantage in developing these resources.
The company has interests in nearby Blocks 17 and 32, operated by TotalEnergies SE, which hold a cumulative 9 billion barrels of recoverable oil resources. However, the key question is whether ExxonMobil can turn remaining resources into high-return barrels to offset declines in existing fields.
