FAO Food Price Index Edges Up Amid Weather Concerns
The FAO Food Price Index rose by 0.6% in July 2026 compared to June, reaching its highest level since last year. The index tracks global food commodity prices and is influenced by weather, energy, and geopolitical concerns.
This month's increase was driven by higher quotations for cereals, vegetable oils, and sugar due to heatwaves and energy price dynamics. The FAO Cereal Price Index increased by 3.4% from June, with global wheat prices surging by 5.8% amid disruptions to Black Sea export flows.
The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index also rose by 2%, reaching its highest level since June 2022. International quotations for palm oil and soy oil increased due to firm demand and robust feedstock requirements.
However, the FAO Meat Price Index weakened by 2.8% from its record high in June, with international poultry prices decreasing due to lower quotations in Brazil. World bovine meat prices eased amid weaker import demand from Asia.
