FAO: Global Food Prices Hit 3-Year High Amid Weather Disasters and Conflict
Global food prices have reached their highest level in over three years due to unfavorable weather conditions and escalating conflicts, particularly in the Gulf and Black Sea regions. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the FAO Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points in July, surpassing its previous peak since January 2023.
The Cereal Price Index saw a significant 3.4% month-on-month increase, driven by a 5.8% surge in wheat prices. This upward trend was fueled by various factors, including hot weather and rain shortages affecting crop yields.
The FAO's report highlights the ongoing impact of global conflicts on food markets. The agency noted that these events continue to support crop markets, contributing to higher prices.
