FAO: Global Food Prices Hit Three-Year High Amid Weather Disruptions and Conflict
Global food prices have reached a three-year high in July due to weather-related issues and the ongoing conflict in the Gulf and Black Sea regions. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in internationally traded food commodities, averaged 131.1 points in July, surpassing its previous reading since January 2023. This increase marks a 0.8% month-on-month rise from June.
The Cereal Price Index was the primary driver of this trend, rising by 3.4% and fueled by a 5.8% jump in wheat prices. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stated that these price hikes were largely due to adverse weather conditions and escalating conflicts.
