FAO: Global Food Prices Rise as Cereals, Sugar Costs Increase

Global food prices rose in July as cereals and sugar became more expensive. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the FAO Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points in July, a 0.6% increase from June and 1.0% higher than its level a year earlier.

The rise was largely driven by cereals, with wheat prices jumping 5.8%. Weather conditions, energy markets, and geopolitical developments influenced prices during the month. The FAO Cereal Price Index rose 3.4% from June, reversing its decline in May.

Sugar prices also made a comeback in July, rising 5.6%. Concerns over hot and dry weather affecting crop yields in the European Union and El Nino-related risks to production prospects in key Asian producing countries contributed to the increase.
