FAO Warns of New Wave of Food Inflation Amid Global Price Surge
Global food prices reached a three-year high in July, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points in July, up from 130.3 points in June, its highest level since January 2023.
The index's Cereal Price Index drove the upward trend, increasing by 3.4 percent month-on-month and fueled by a 5.8 percent rise in wheat prices. Wheat markets were affected by concerns over export disruptions from the Black Sea region and crop damage caused by heat waves in key producing areas.
The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index rose by 2 percent to its highest level since June 2022, while sugar prices climbed by 5.6 percent due to weather concerns in Europe and Asia and expectations of increased ethanol demand in Brazil.
