Farm Groups Renew Push for Federal Aid Amid Low Commodity Prices
Farm groups and lawmakers are pressing for additional federal aid as low commodity prices continue to strain the nation's agricultural economy. Corn and soybean prices have dropped significantly from record highs reached earlier this decade, while farmers face elevated expenses for land, equipment, labor, and financing.
Higher interest rates have added to the financial pressure, leaving many producers with narrow or even negative profit margins. Agricultural economists project another difficult year for row-crop producers, making it challenging for farmers to cover rising input costs.
The American Farm Bureau Federation and commodity groups are urging Congress to strengthen the federal farm safety net. They argue that reference prices used in commodity support programs have not kept pace with today's production costs, reducing the effectiveness of existing assistance programs during periods of prolonged low prices.
