Farmer Sentiment Boosts Used Equipment Sales Amid Crop Price Rally
A recent auction of used farm equipment points to a recovery in the agricultural economy. The sale of Donald 'Shorty' Peterson's 104-year-old Deere tractor fetched $183,750, more than $13,000 above the highest price for that model this year.
Strong demand for used farm equipment has kept auction prices high as retiring farmers sold machinery and improving crop markets boosted confidence. The recent rallies in corn, wheat, and soybean prices have improved sentiment, with corn futures jumping about 15% in August to a three-year high.
The recovery is attributed to several factors, including the sale of machinery by retiring farmers, which has increased the demand for used equipment. Industry leaders, such as Deere and CNH Industrial NV, are cautiously optimistic about the prospects for new machine sales, citing green shoots in the agricultural economy.
However, experts warn that it may take a steeper rise in crop prices to spur meaningful recovery in sales. Andy Campbell, director of insights at Tractor Zoom, notes that the supply has continued to come down, but the machinery market is still trying to find the bottom.
