Farmers' Sentiment Rebounds in July with Higher Commodity Prices
The Purdue Ag Economy Barometer rebounded in July after three consecutive months of decline, reflecting greater optimism among farmers. The index rose from 113 in June to 126 in July, with both measures that make up the index improving.
The Index of Current Conditions increased by 20 points and the Index of Future Expectations rose by 11 points. Higher corn and soybean prices during the survey period likely contributed to the improved outlook.
Despite the stronger sentiment, high input costs remain the top concern for farmers, cited by 46% of respondents as the biggest challenge currently facing their operations. Crop or livestock prices were identified as the greatest threat to long-term success over the next five to ten years by 30% of respondents.
