Fed Hawkishness Sinks Stocks, Oil Prices Soar Amid Middle East Tensions
The US Federal Reserve's hawkish stance on interest rates has sent shockwaves through global markets. Fed boss Kevin Warsh stated that underlying inflation must be moving to its target of two percent 'clearly and at sufficient speed' for him to consider a rate hike.
Warsh's comments, made at the Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming, sparked a sell-off in Asian stocks on Monday. The Nikkei 225 fell by 1.6 percent, while the Hang Seng Index dropped by 0.8 percent.
Oil prices spiked after a fresh flare-up in the Middle East, with both main crude contracts rising more than two percent. West Texas Intermediate jumped to $85.33 per barrel, while Brent North Sea Crude reached $90.39 per barrel.
