Fed-Treasury Rate Suppression Sparks Gold and Silver Rally

The recent rally in gold and silver prices can be attributed to the suppression of interest rates by both the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury, a phenomenon that does not require an official announcement to move precious metals markets.

At the heart of precious metals pricing is the concept of real interest rates, which are nominal rates adjusted for inflation. When real yields are compressed or declining, investors lose their incentive to hold cash or bonds, making non-yielding assets like gold and silver more attractive.

The Federal Reserve's role in rate management is well-known, but what is less appreciated is that quantitative easing can occur without an official announcement. Over the past six months, the Fed's balance sheet expanded by approximately $300 billion, or around $40 to $50 billion per month in net asset accumulation.

The U.S. Treasury also plays a crucial role in rate suppression through its bond buyback programs and management of issuance maturity composition, which suppress long-dated yields independently of the Fed's short-end management.
