Fifth Circuit Panel Skeptical of LNG Terminal Permit Challenge

A Fifth Circuit panel has expressed skepticism about the environmental groups' standing to challenge Louisiana's approval of a preconstruction permit for a major liquefied natural gas export terminal in Cameron Parish. The terminal, which is part of the planned Plaquemines LNG project, would be one of the largest such facilities on the Gulf Coast.

The panel questioned whether the groups had sufficiently demonstrated that they could prove harm to their own interests if the permit was approved. This comes after a US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana previously ruled in favor of the environmental groups, finding that they had standing to challenge the permit.

The Plaquemines LNG project has been a topic of controversy due to concerns over its potential impact on the environment and local communities. The terminal is expected to be one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Louisiana, and opponents have argued that it would harm nearby wetlands and wildlife habitats.
