First Nations-Led LNG Project Aims to Export Gas to Europe
A First Nations-led coalition has proposed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project to export up to 15 million tonnes of gas annually to European buyers. The Kino Aski LNG project, developed by Kino Aski Inc. and Marinvest Energy Canada Inc., aims to create tens of thousands of construction jobs and approximately 4,000 permanent positions during operations.
The project's commercial pitch emphasizes the growing ties between Ottawa and Brussels amid volatile energy markets. European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen described the EU-Canada relationship as 'a strategic asset.'
Kino Aski Inc., led by Constant Awashish, aims to assemble a coalition of First Nations across Quebec and Ontario. The gas would be sourced from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and transported through existing and new pipeline infrastructure to the year-round Port of Baie-Comeau.
