Fitzroy Minerals: The Copper Playbook That Could Follow in Cabral Gold's Footsteps
Fitzroy Minerals is often compared to Cabral Gold, another junior mining company in Latin America. Both companies use the same low-capital, quick-to-cash-flow, heap-leach starter-project template in the region.
Cabral Gold recently received an operating license from Pará State environmental authority SEMAS/PA, allowing it to use cyanide in its leaching circuit and setting the first gold production for September 2026. The company's shares closed at C$1.31 the next day, valuing it at roughly C$306-$400 million.
This re-rating was largely driven by the market applying Cabral Gold's pre-feasibility study parameters to current gold prices and adding a de-risking premium from the operating license grant and completed plant construction.
Fitzroy Minerals, on the other hand, has a similar business model but with one key difference: it has a contractual right with its neighbor, Sociedad Punta del Cobre S.A., to buy back 30% of its Buen Retiro copper project for roughly US$20 million in cash.
This arrangement is equivalent to a partner-funded pre-production cash injection and removes the need for Fitzroy Minerals to issue equity to fund its own construction costs.
