Food Counterfeiting Soars: Top 10 Most Faked Foods Exposed
The food industry is facing a growing problem of counterfeiting, with some of the world's most trusted foods being faked or mislabeled. According to Cerfinity, a Digital Provenance Technology company, the global food fraud costs an estimated $30-$40 billion per year, and reported incidents have risen over 1,000% since 2020.
Cerfinity has compiled a list of the top 10 most counterfeited foods, which includes olive oil, milk & dairy, honey, seafood, spices, coffee, spirits & wine, vanilla, maple syrup, and Wagyu, truffle & caviar. These products share a common profile: high price per unit, no way for consumers to verify authenticity by sight, and a long supply chain that allows cheaper substitutes to slip in unnoticed.
Cerfinity's Digital Provenance Technology platform aims to combat food fraud by making authenticity a property of the individual package. The platform combines three elements into a single tap-to-verify experience: a tamper-evident provenance seal, a permanent provenance registry binding, and a consumer-facing proof that only the producer can issue.
The platform is designed to complement existing certification programs rather than replace them. It does not test, grade, or make health claims about a product, but instead verifies authenticity, origin, and tamper status. Cerfinity is currently onboarding pilot producers across premium food categories including honey, spirits, and specialty meats.
