Food Crisis Deepens as Global Temperatures Soar

The world is facing a severe food crisis due to various factors such as climate change, demographic shifts, and short-sighted policies. The global population has surpassed eight billion people, with uneven growth rates in different regions. Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East have high birth rates and limited resources, while Europe, North America, and East Asia are grappling with depopulation and an aging population.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has also significantly impacted the global grain market. The Black Sea ports' blockade led to a surge in wheat prices to historic highs of $400 per tonne. However, thanks to the grain deal, prices stabilized at around $240-270 per tonne. Nevertheless, renewed escalation in the Black Sea waters this summer threatens another price increase.

The drought in Europe is a side effect of 'super' El Niño, which triggers weather anomalies worldwide. This phenomenon accelerates global warming, leading to extreme droughts in humid regions and catastrophic downpours in arid areas. The climate crisis poses a serious threat to global food security and forces farmers to adapt, but this process takes time and money.

The situation in the Middle East also contributes to the food crisis. The Strait of Hormuz blockade affects the transportation of energy resources, fertilizers, and fuel for agricultural machinery. This leads to higher costs and physical shortages, causing a long-term agri-food shock and potential price increases.
