Global food prices have reached their highest level since November 2022 as supply risks escalate due to weather-related disruptions and trade tensions. The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that its Food Price Index, which tracks a basket of internationally traded food commodities, averaged 133.3 points in August, a 2.5% increase from July.

The FAO cited extreme heat and drought in Europe, the threat of El Nino, and trade upheaval caused by the Ukraine and Iran wars as contributing factors to the price surge. The agency's Chief Economist Maximo Torero noted that climate shocks, geopolitical tensions, and disrupted trade logistics are tightening supply expectations.

The FAO's price benchmarks for cereals, vegetable oils, sugar, meat, and dairy all rose in August, with the cereals price index increasing 2.2% month-on-month to its highest since May 2024. The agency also cut its global cereal production forecast by 3.4 million metric tons from a previous estimate in July.

The FAO's revised projection for world cereal stocks at the close of 2026/2027 is now only marginally above the previous season, and coarse grain stocks were reduced while wheat stocks were slightly increased due to shipping disruption.
