Food Prices Hit Three-Year High Amid Global Conflict and Weather Disruptions
Global food prices have reached their highest level in over three years, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO's food price index rose by 0.8 points in July to an average of 131.1, surpassing its previous high in January 2023.
The main contributor to this increase was a rise in cereal prices, with wheat prices increasing by 5.8%. Adverse weather conditions and heightened tensions in key agricultural regions have led to supply chain disruptions and price pressures on international markets.
The conflict in the Black Sea region has severely restricted grain exports from Ukraine and Russia, while the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has impacted agricultural production and fertilizer prices.
