Food Prices Hit Three-Year High Amid Global Supply Concerns
Global food prices have reached their highest level in over three years, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The Food Price Index rose by 0.6% in July to 131.1 points, driven by increases in cereal, sugar, and vegetable oil prices.
The cereal price index saw a significant increase of 3.4%, with wheat prices rising due to concerns over disruptions to Black Sea exports and damage to export infrastructure. Maize prices also rose by 3.6%. In contrast, meat and dairy prices declined, with the meat price index falling by 2.8% and dairy prices decreasing by 0.7%.
The vegetable oil price index climbed 2%, reaching its highest level since June 2022, supported by higher palm and soybean oil prices. Sugar prices also rose, increasing by 5.6% amid concerns over the impact of weather conditions on crops.
