Food Prices Reach Three-Year High Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Global food prices have reached their highest level in three and a half years, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO's price index for a basket of basic food products averaged 131.1 points in July, a 0.6% increase from June.

The rise is driven by higher wheat and corn prices due to geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea region and heat waves affecting this year's crop. Wheat prices jumped 5.8% on concerns about exports, while corn prices rose 3.6% due to hot and dry weather in key producing countries.

Barley prices fell 1.9% due to favorable expectations for this year's crop in Australia and the Black Sea region. Sugar prices increased by 5.6%, reaching their highest level since January 2023.
