Ford and Smith's Pipeline Proposal Sparks Concerns Over Taxpayer Funding
Canada's Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have proposed a pipeline project called the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, which would transport crude oil from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario.
The existing cross-border pipeline, Line 5, is heavily relied upon by Canada, with over half of Ontario's and two-thirds of Quebec's crude oil passing through it. However, Michigan's governor has been trying to shut down the pipeline due to environmental concerns.
The Ford/Smith proposal lacks a construction timeline, official cost estimate, or private investors, but Ford wants the Ontario government to own and fund the project.
