Ontario Premier Doug Ford and US President Donald Trump engaged in a war of words over trade tariffs, escalating tensions between the two nations.

In response to Trump's threat to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian autos, auto parts, and steel, Ford suggested that Canada should retaliate by cutting off oil exports to the US. He proposed buying Alberta's oil and putting it into a strategic reserve, while also suggesting that Canada withhold potash and uranium exports from Saskatchewan or triple their prices for American buyers.

Ford also floated reintroducing a surcharge on Ontario's electricity exports to the US to cause economic pain. However, he emphasized that he needs the support of other provinces to take these measures effectively.

Trump responded with insults, calling Ford 'the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother' of late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and a 'dictator,' 'bully,' and 'loser.' He threatened to shut down pipelines that transport energy products from Canada through the US, including Enbridge's Line 5.

The trade tensions come as the two countries were close to a deal last week before negotiations fell apart. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada walked away from what he called a 'bad deal' and will retaliate with countertariffs that will take effect on September 8.
