Ford Fires Back at Trump: Canada Won't Be Treated Like a State
Ontario Premier Doug Ford fired back at U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to increase tariffs on Canadian autos and steel to 50% in January.
'He can kiss my ass, as far as I'm concerned,' Ford said in a live interview on NewsTalk 1010 Monday morning.
The dispute began when Trump threatened the higher tariffs on Truth Social, saying Canada would be treated like a state no longer and that it's among the worst nations to deal with. He claimed they feel entitled but 'WE DON'T NEED CANADA'.
Ford suggested Canada respond by cutting off oil exports to the U.S., which would affect car manufacturers in Alberta. He also proposed reintroducing a surcharge on Ontario's electricity exports to the U.S. and buying Alberta's oil for strategic reserves, citing frustration with Premier Danielle Smith for not being 'part of Team Canada'.
Ford called for other provinces to join him in retaliating against the tariffs, including Quebec and those out west.
