Formosa Plastics' Algae Oil Technology Earns EU Sustainability Certification
Formosa Plastics' New Smart has achieved a significant milestone in the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with the issuance of ISCC EU international sustainability and carbon certification for its algae oil technology. The certification, which was audited by Bureau Veritas, demonstrates Chenghao Technology's solid results in algae oil technology development and sustainability management.
The Taiwanese government has set a policy target of 5% SAF usage for Taiwanese airlines by 2030, and Formosa Plastics New Smart is positioning itself to meet this demand with its microalgae cultivation and algae oil production technology. The company's Chairwoman, Wang Jui-yu, stated that feedstock supply must develop along multiple pathways to respond to future SAF demand growth.
Formosa Plastics Biomedical will focus on waste cooking oil recycling and reuse, while Formosa Plastics New Smart will develop locally producible bio-based feedstock through microalgae technology. This dual-track strategy aims to build a self-reliant and resilient next-generation SAF feedstock supply system in Taiwan.
Liu Hui-chi, General Manager of Formosa Plastics New Smart, explained that the key to microalgae advancing toward SAF applications lies in oil production efficiency, process stability, and scalability. Chenghao has developed high-efficiency oil-producing algae strains and heterotrophic fermentation mass production technology.
The company will continue to leverage the Formosa Plastics Group's industrial resources to advance microalgae technology scale-up and algae oil industrialization, with a focus on commercial-scale validation and cost optimization.
