FortisBC Pours Billions into Tilbury Island LNG Expansion
FortisBC is planning to invest billions in expanding its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Tilbury Island, which will increase capacity by 250% and make it a major hub for LNG supply in the region. The expansion, worth around $6 billion, will provide up to 0.65 million tonnes of liquefaction capacity per year and create over 1,100 jobs during construction.
The project involves three major components: Tilbury expansion Phase 1B, the construction of the Tilbury Marine Jetty by Fortis subsidiary Tilbury Pacific, and Tilbury expansion Phase 2. The new infrastructure will allow for ship-to-ship service and direct loading of LNG vessels, reducing reliance on barging.
The project has received approval from the B.C. government and is expected to be completed by 2031. According to FortisBC, the expansion will provide more than $800 million in gross domestic product during construction and support the growing demand for low-carbon LNG fuel in the maritime sector.
