Fossil Fuels Dominate Italian Energy Mix Amid Renewable Growth
The Italian energy mix remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels, with oil and gas covering 71% of total demand in the second quarter. Despite a decline in primary energy demand due to reduced heating consumption, fossil fuels continue to dominate the country's energy landscape.
In contrast, renewables account for just 23% of Italia's energy mix, although they are consolidating their contribution thanks to growing shares of solar and wind power.
The first edition of Polaris, the new Snam Observatory on the Italian gas system, paints this picture. The report highlights the crucial role that gas continues to play in the national energy system, accounting for 30% of primary energy demand.
Against this backdrop, gas storage has been playing a stabilizing role, particularly with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East adding complexity to global markets.
