Freeport-McMoRan Earnings Soar on Copper Prices Amid Operational Headwinds
Freeport-McMoRan, the world's largest publicly listed copper producer, reported strong Q2 earnings despite operational challenges at its Grasberg mining complex. The company delivered adjusted earnings per share of 74 cents, exceeding Wall Street's projection range of 59-62 cents.
The miner's total revenue reached $7.03 billion, a 7% year-over-year decline, but still beating the analyst forecast of $6.71 billion. Copper pricing dynamics were the primary performance catalyst, with average realized copper prices increasing by 35.9% to $6.17 per pound.
However, production metrics painted a contrasting picture, with copper output decreasing 18.2% to 786 million pounds and gold production plummeting 39.4%. The Grasberg complex, which operates at approximately 50% of normal capacity, bears primary responsibility for these declines.
