Freeport-McMoRan Poised to Meet Copper Demand with Expansion Plans
Copper is an essential metal in today's world, and its demand has been increasing due to the trend of electrification. The annual production of copper stood at 23 million metric tons in 2024, but it's likely that many of the largest and easiest-to-exploit copper deposits have already been found.
Freeport-McMoRan is one of the world's top copper producers, with a collection of copper and molybdenum mineral assets that would be difficult to replicate by a competitor. The company operates 10 major copper mines, including the largest above-ground copper deposit ever discovered, Grasberg in Papua, Indonesia.
Freeport-McMoRan plans to grow its production significantly by +60% by 2030, which will support over 100,000 U.S. jobs and a broad network of suppliers and local businesses. The company directly employs 29,000 employees and holds 158 patents focused on metallurgical extraction, smelting safety, and vehicle logistics.
