Freeport-McMoRan Poised to Ride Copper Price Wave
The price of copper has recently reached an all-time high, and Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX), one of the largest copper miners in the world, is poised to benefit.
Freeport-McMoRan has several growth initiatives underway, including a low-cost leaching initiative that management believes will produce 800 million pounds of copper per annum. The company also expects to rapidly expand production over the next few years as it brings production back online at Grasberg in Indonesia following an incident in 2025.
The miner has several brownfield expansion projects in its pipeline, including one in Bagdad, Arizona, which management believes could double production at the mine. An investment decision is expected by the end of the year.
Despite the recent surge in copper prices, Freeport-McMoRan trades at attractive valuation multiples compared to historical averages. For example, its enterprise value-to-EBITDA ratio is 6.8 times, which is lower than the average EBITDA multiple of 9.01x over the last decade.
The company's low-cost production and expansion plans make it well-placed to benefit from the ongoing shift in structural demand for copper, driven by the electrification-of-everything megatrend.
