French Wheat Returns to Sudan After Eight-Year Absence
A French bulk carrier has loaded wheat at the port of Rouen for shipment to Sudan, marking the first such delivery since August 2008.
The MV Algeria Star is carrying around 30,000 metric tonnes of hard wheat, bound for Port Sudan in a move aimed at supporting Sudan's embattled food-security programme.
Sudan has struggled with food insecurity due to years of civil conflict, economic mismanagement, and the UN-sanctioned grain embargo imposed after the 2023 coup.
The resumption of French wheat exports reflects a shift in the international community's approach to Sudan's humanitarian crisis, with Paris officials emphasizing that the shipment is purely humanitarian and will be sold on the open market under UN supervision.
