Fungal Diseases Threaten Canada's Wheat and Rapeseed Harvests

Canada's wheat and rapeseed harvests are facing significant threats from widespread fungal diseases. An unusually wet spring followed by hot and humid weather has created ideal conditions for disease development in key agricultural regions.

The main concerns lie with spring wheat and durum, which are vulnerable to fusarium head blight. Canola is also under threat from sclerotinia and blackleg, while pulse crops have been affected by a range of fungal diseases.

Canadian farmers have responded by increasing fungicide applications this season, incurring additional treatment costs estimated at $6-20 per acre. This comes on top of already-high production costs due to high fertilizer prices.

Crops currently appear healthy, but the full impact of disease will only become apparent once harvesting begins. Disease pressure could affect not only yields but also grain and seed quality.
