GAIL Expands Natural Gas Pipeline Network, Petrochemicals Amid Energy Security Concerns
GAIL (India) Ltd, India's largest natural gas transmission company, is expanding its operations in various sectors to ensure energy security and transition. GAIL's chairman, Deepak Gupta, emphasized the importance of balancing energy security with cleaner fuels, citing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to LNG supply chains.
The company plans to expand its natural gas pipeline network by an additional 1,500 km, taking it closer to 20,000 km, making it India's largest transmission system. GAIL is also doubling the capacity of its Jamnagar-Loni LPG pipeline from 3.25 MMTPA to 6.5 MMTPA and developing three new LPG pipelines with a combined length of about 1,775 km.
GAIL is investing heavily in petrochemicals, commissioning a 60,000-tonne-a-year polypropylene unit at Pata and progressing with its 500,000-tonne-a-year propane dehydrogenation-polypropylene project at Usar. The company also plans to enter the purified terephthalic acid (PTA) market with a new plant in Mangalore.
GAIL is diversifying its LNG sourcing portfolio and expanding its shipping capabilities, concluding long-term charter agreements for two new vessels. The company's overseas operations are being expanded through subsidiaries GAIL Global (USA) LNG LLC and GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte Ltd.
