GAIL Prioritizes Energy Security Amid LNG Supply Chain Disruptions
GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta emphasized the importance of energy security alongside energy transition in light of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chain disruptions. Speaking at GAIL's 42nd Annual General Meeting, Gupta highlighted the vulnerabilities exposed by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. This has led to volatility in LNG prices, freight rates, and supply availability.
Gupta noted that the situation underscores the need for countries and energy companies to diversify their supply sources and strengthen infrastructure. GAIL currently has an LNG sourcing portfolio of 16.56 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), comprising long-term contracts and market-linked procurement. In 2025-26, the company imported 132 LNG cargoes, including seven spot cargoes.
Gupta stated that FY 2025-26 'underscored a fundamental reality: energy security has become as important as energy transition.' He added that GAIL's strategic direction is to expand the National Gas Grid, strengthen gas marketing, diversify LNG sourcing and shipping, expand petrochemicals and LPG infrastructure, support city gas distribution and compressed biogas development, progress fertilizer projects, and selectively explore upstream resources and critical minerals.
