Galp Energia Rides Strong Oil Prices and Low-Carbon Investments
Galp Energia reported significant improvements in its first-half earnings, driven by increased oil production in Brazil and stronger crude oil prices. The company's adjusted net income reached €812 million for the six-month period and €540 million in the second quarter, a notable increase from last year.
The rise in earnings was attributed to a 17% year-over-year increase in oil and natural gas production, partly due to the start of operations at the Bacalhau field in Brazil. Additionally, Brent crude prices rose by 28% compared to the same period last year, reaching an average price of $92.30 per barrel.
The company's refining segment also contributed to its earnings growth, with refining margins averaging $15.80 per barrel for the first half of the year.
Galp's investments in low-carbon projects at its Sines refinery in Portugal are a key part of its strategy to transition towards more sustainable energy sources. The company is developing two low-carbon projects: a 100-MW electrolyzer plant for large-scale production of green hydrogen and a new plant designed to produce renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, bio-naphtha, and bio-propane using green hydrogen.
The Sines renewable fuels plant, which will include a renewable feedstock pretreating unit, is expected to replace up to 263,000 tonnes per year of conventional diesel, 193,000 tonnes per year of fossil-based jet fuel, and between 4-69,000 tonnes per year of naphtha.
