Gas Crisis Hits Bangladesh as LNG Terminal Faults

A severe gas shortage has crippled Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh after a technical fault at the Excelerate Energy-operated floating LNG terminal off Moheshkhali reduced national gas supply. The incident resulted in long queues at filling stations, with drivers waiting between two and six hours to refuel.

Drivers like Shah Alam expressed frustration over the limited gas supply, stating that it not only wastes time but also reduces their income. 'Before, I could almost fill the tank at one go. Now, even after waiting so long, I get only a little gas,' he said.

In Brahmanbaria, low pressure has affected several filling stations, with some experiencing as low as 1-2psi, making it difficult for drivers to refuel. Auto-rickshaw driver Md Yasin waited nearly four hours to refuel but could only get Tk155 worth of gas due to the low pressure.

The shortage has also disrupted industrial production in Narayanganj, where some factories are using diesel and generators at additional cost. Energy Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam stated that a team of experts from the UK is assessing the damage and working to restore the facility, with repairs expected to be completed by tomorrow or the following day.
