A natural gas leak at Bluewater Health's CEE hospital in Petrolia forced the evacuation of its Emergency Department and Acute Care unit on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred just before 8 p.m., prompting the hospital to redirect ambulances to Sarnia for about three hours.

A contractor was installing a sprinkler system when they inadvertently drilled into a gas line in the basement kitchen area, according to Fire Chief Rick Cousins.

Enbridge Gas and the Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department responded promptly, shutting off the gas supply and allowing patients to safely return to their rooms.
