Gas Prices Soar to 2022 Levels Amid Gulf Conflict
Wholesale gas prices have reached levels not seen since 2022 due to the ongoing conflict in the Gulf, according to market data. Dr Simon Cran-McGreehin, Head of Analysis at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), attributed this increase to the US war with Iran, which has pushed up bills and driven wider inflation.
The cost to the UK from these fossil fuel price fluctuations exceeded £180 billion in four years, with an additional £10 billion added in just the first six months of the Iran war. This volatility is a major concern for households and businesses, who are facing another winter with rising bills.
In light of this situation, Dr Cran-McGreehin emphasized that only by transitioning away from gas and oil can we protect ourselves from volatile international fossil fuel markets. He noted that any extra North Sea production has little impact, making the shift to EVs and heat pumps powered by UK wind and solar a more viable option.
