Gas Shortages Threaten Europe's Winter Supplies
Europe's gas storage facilities may not be filled to at least 80% before winter due to supply shortages, warns Anders Opedal, CEO of Norwegian energy company Equinor.
The reasons for this shortfall are twofold: the global gas market is experiencing a tense situation, and Asian buyers are increasing their demand, outcompeting European imports. Currently, Europe's gas reserves stand at 54% capacity, leaving it vulnerable to price fluctuations in winter.
The Strait of Hormuz shipping crisis has halted about one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, typically destined for Asian consumers. Additionally, Russia's pipeline gas supplies to Europe are being gradually phased out due to the war in Ukraine.
