Gas Supply Disruption Plunges Aba into Darkness as Geometric Power Plant Shuts Down

The Geometric Power Plant in Osisioma Industrial Layout has been shut down due to a gas supply disruption, plunging Aba residents into darkness. The outage began around 6:30 p.m. on Friday and is affecting customers served by Aba Power, the electricity distribution arm of the Geometric Power Group.

According to Ugo Opiegbe, Managing Director of Aba Power, a significant drop in gas pressure has made it impossible for the plant's turbines to operate. The company did not identify the gas supplier, but industry sources suggest that Heirs Energies has supplied gas to the Geometric Power Plant over the past three years.

Industry analysts link the problem to long-standing infrastructure challenges inherited by Heirs Energies after acquiring operatorship of Oil Mining Lease 17 (OML 17) from The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited. Dike Ejike, a mechanical engineer and energy consultant, notes that while Heirs Energies has made significant operational improvements, it continues to grapple with aging facilities.

Opiegbe warned that electricity supply may not resume within the next 24 hours, and industry analysts are urging strengthened gas infrastructure to ensure stable power generation.
